Statement
Return to the act of looking, move with your attention
I create works that invite you to spend time looking, that make you ask „What do I see?“ An exercise that brings you back to the act of looking itself, letting your attention linger in a quiet moment of equilibrium like a hanging mobile. How does attention move? What calls it, what holds it tight, what makes it float, loosely? I create spaces within spaces, images within images, for eye and attention to fixate on and travel through.
Material surrounding as enabler and testimony of daily life
I believe material and spatial conditions drive much of our experience and behaviour. As such I’m interested in the interplay of everyday life and everyday space: In how both private and public spaces reflect, accompany, enable and hold our everyday endeavors and longings. The neighbours house we stare at, the table we dine at, the traffic light we wait at, day by day. I use these physical conditions to expand the experience depicted in my images, blurring the lines between subject, body and space. In my sculptural work, reused objects become testimonies of former lives. Here, it's the work itself that becomes part of the material, spatial surrounding of the viewer, shaping their experience and behaviour.
Play, inbetweenness and freedom: Telling multidimensional stories
Moving between emergence and dissolution, my figuration remains hard to grasp: There is no single story, no single truth, no fact to present to an audience as an objective discovery. My work speaks to the simultaneity of experiences that make up an interaction; of everyone and everything present in, necessary for and resulting from an encounter. A moving equilibrium called play. Play as in interplay, as in das Spiel der Angel in der Tür, as the antics of a trickster god, handing you questions where you asked for answers.
“The compositions of Chie’s paintings are intimate and can have a mysterious quality. The figures are often depicted as if in a state of suspension, the aftermath of some unknown action. Vulnerability and sovereignty emanate from both the figures and the paintings.”
